Speakers

Javier Jaramillo, senior associate at Pérez Bustamante & Ponce

Javier is a senior associate at Pérez Bustamante & Ponce (PBP) in Quito, Ecuador. He concentrates his practice on dispute resolution, with special focus on domestic and international arbitration. Prior to joining PBP, Javier worked as an international lawyer in the arbitration department of Latham & Watkins in Paris. Currently, he also serves as arbitration secretary in the most important arbitration centers in Ecuador. His professional performance has been recognized by Chambers and Partners in the category "Associate to Watch" in dispute resolution and as "Future Leader" in arbitration by Who's Who Legal. On the academic side, Javier lectures both in undergraduate and graduate programs in matters related to civil law, oral advocacy and arbitration. He also serves as co-director of the Ecuadorian Arbitration Review and Ambassador for Arbitration Intelligence. Javier earned his J.D. summa cum laude from Universidad San Francisco de Quito where he was Valedictorian of his class. He also holds an LL.M. from Harvard Law School where he earned the Dean’s Scholar Prize in International Commercial Arbitration. Additionally, he holds a Superior Diploma in ADR from Universidad Andina Simón Bolívar where he was also Valedictorian of his class. Javier is admitted to the practice of law in Ecuador and New York.

Álvaro Awad, partner at Contreras Velozo

Álvaro is a partner at Contreras Velozo, a dispute resolution boutique law firm in Santiago, Chile. He concentrates his practice on civil and commercial law, litigation and arbitration. He is listed as Arbitrator in the Santiago Court of Appeals’ Official Roster and in the National Pro Bono Arbitration Program. On the academic side, he is a Professor of Civil Law, Oral Advocacy and Arbitration at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, where he earned his J.D. summa cum laude. He also holds an LL.M. from The University of Chicago Law School, where he studied with both a Fulbright and a Chile Scholarship. He is the Ambassador for Arbitrator Intelligence in Chile, serves as a Reporter for the Bulletin of International Commercial and Investment Arbitration in Latin America and participates as a Founding Member of the Executive Committee at the Santiago Very Young Arbitration Practitioners Group.
